Tuesday Tips: 6 Lessons from Group Fitness Classes

This weekend I'm auditioning to teach Body Combat, a martial-arts-inspired group exercise class. If I pass the audition, I go onto a weekend training. Then I submit a video of myself teaching, and if I pass THAT, then I can start team teaching and subbing classes and eventually the goal is to have my own regular class at the gym. This audition is all I can think about, so that's what the tips are inspired by this week.

Doing

1. Even if you might fail, TRY IT!
Kelly and I were greeted by the gym maintenance man as we pulled up on our bikes last Friday. He asked if we were going to class, and said he thought we were instructors. "Not yet!" I said. With enthusiasm he said, "If you don't try, you'll always wonder what would have happened." When I told my first-ever group fitness instructor about my plans to audition, she said, "This will be the best decision of your life!" I mean, right?!

2. Do things for fun.
When I started taking Body Combat at the YMCA, I would just laugh and smile through the whole thing. I could not BELIEVE I was shuffling around a mirrored room punching the air. I felt silly and self conscious, but euphoric and eager to learn. The class is just my jam! It's often the most fun thing I do all week. The people, the energy, the music, the routines--I am hopelessly hooked! Every time I start to stress about my audition, I just remind myself I'm doing it for fun. I'm doing it because I have this unstoppable love for kickboxing set to pop music that brings tears to my eyes. Kelly and I always say to each other, "Les Mills saved my life again." (Les Mills is the company that produces Body Combat.) The group fitness classes we take are what we credit with keeping us healthy, diurnal, and off of drugs.

3. Tell people your dreams. They believe in you and want to help you!
My fitness instructors at the gym are my heroes. These people have wonderful attitudes, inspiring confidence and endless charisma. They are the people helping me become the best version of myself I can be, physically, mentally and spiritually. Magen, Boni and Dee Dee, THANK YOU for your encouragement and support!

4. Believe in yourself.
I could focus on all the things I'm afraid of, or I can emphasize how EXCITED I am, and all the great changes that are happening in my life. I'm getting stronger. I can do legit pushups and Kelly complimented my side kicks. I've been taking Body Combat for about three years, and it's influenced my life in so many ways. I used to not be able to hang our bicycles up, but it was only because I didn't think I could. One day I said to myself, "If I'm going to become a fitness instructor, I have to be able to hang my own bike from a hook on the ceiling." Then one day I tried it, and I could. And now it's easy. I can do it!

5. Don't be attached to a specific outcome.
If I don't pass this audition, I'll just have to ask how I can improve and try again another time. I have to be ok with failing. I have to be ok with people judging me if I fail. I have to trust the flow of life. I have to remember that everything happens in perfect time. "When it is all finished, you will discover it was never random."

6. Be brave.
I am scared to post this! I am so scared to fail! But I have to remember fear is just excitement with the brakes on. While I am pursuing this unexpected passion of mine, I want to share as much of the experience as I can. Blogging is a fine line of divulging personal experiences and sharing life lessons, but nothing helps me make sense of life better. I want to remember my grad school passion of BE TRANSPARENT! WHO NEEDS PRIVACY?! LIFESTREAM EVERYTHING!

Wouldn't it be nice to feel confident? Wouldn't it be nice to feel better and better as the day goes on? Wouldn't it be nice to learn new tricks? Wouldn't it be nice to get our shopping done? Wouldn't it be nice to find a jackpot? Wouldn't it be nice to let it unfold? Wouldn't it be nice to relax and be in the now? Wouldn't it be nice to trust the flow? Wouldn't it be nice to allow well being?

I'm choosing to switch to the reality I prefer. In the reality I prefer, life is working out for me. Life is taking care of me. Life is on my side. Life is taking care of me.

I feel the best I've ever felt. I feel confident and excited about life. I feel strong and powerful. I am connected to my source. I am allowing well being. I am in control of my vibration. Tuesday Tips: 6 Ways to Embrace Contrast

I get addicted to the peaks in life. I want EVERY MOMENT to be some sort of exotic, thrilling, heart-pounding excitement. I hate the boring parts. The sadness. The daily irritations. But that's half of life! There will always be contrast. Even during major manifestations, there are plenty of "This is nice but I wish it was _______" moments. So instead of resisting the punches, I want to learn how to like them. Just like lucid dreaming and passive income streams satisfy the doer in me by allowing me to be "productive" even in my sleep, learning to embrace contrast gives my spirit the "learn to be happy for 50% more of your life!" guarantee.

Doing

1. Start a blog.
A friend on Facebook tagged me in a post where she listed all the blogs she follows. She mentioned me, "because I started blogging because of her." What an amazing compliment! If anyone else reading wants to give me a compliment, the best way to show your love is by starting your own site! I haven't talked up the School of Life Design lessons in a while, but they still remain true and exciting every time I re-read them. Here is the first lesson, and here is the second, about designing the digital you. One of the best parts of lifestreaming (putting yourself online in any way) is that it helps you see the silver lining of all your experiences. Even when bad things happen, sharing them both "makes light" of them and "brings them to light," helping you laugh and understand more about life.

Thinking

2. Embrace contrast.
If you think you're having a bad time, sit with it. Observe it. Get curious about it instead of resisting it. When you resist it, you just keep creating more of it. What you focus on, expands. This radical self love blog has a great explanation of what happens when you embrace the lows in life:

When we get real and get honest with ourselves we begin to notice a really magical transformation occur. In the face of accepting whatever experience we are having we set ourselves free from the shackles of fear. As we do this our energy relaxes, we become lighter, and our vibration begins to increase.

3. See the flies in your life as flower petals.
A new friend sent me this short animated film that really shifted my perspective when I needed it. If you need a quick fix for embracing the contrast in your life, watch this.

Feeling

4. Observe your feelings instead of trying to avoid them.
I try to remind myself of the Buddhist way of "facing, & then separating ourselves from our painful thoughts/beliefs, until they have no control over us," but haven't been very good at it since the first time I attempted it. The first time I tried, I used the mantra, "I'm observing." It helped me become more aware of what I was thinking, but it didn't help me feel any better. Recently I tried the mantra/awareness activator, "I noticed you're feeling _____. That's ok." It has helped me sit with feelings of irritation, boredom, and lethargy much longer than usual. Once I allow myself to feel the emotion, it usually passes right away.

5. Be your own painkiller.
I'm always trying to avoid pain and discomfort. I attempt to cover up my anxiety and unease with alcohol, food, Facebook, etc. A couple days ago I remembered something Eckhart Tolle wrote: "There is no pain in the Now." Using that as my mantra, I can be more present and less frantic about trying to find something to cover up my feelings.

Being

6. Be god instead of play god.
One of the main things people want in life is control. You want to control your weight, your growth, your career, your health, your relationships. What if we could get what we want by letting go of our need to control all those things? What if we let what we want come to us, instead of trying to control the chaos of life? Claudia Altucher's solution is simple: "The question is not so much 'How do I surrender?' But rather: 'Where Am I Playing God? And can I release the need to control?'"
