Meditation 101 – the remix

Welcome to Meditation 101, the remix. Behold, me as a real person. In this vlog I discuss how I got into meditation and what authors or ideas have helped me on my own spiritual journey. Thank you everyone who writes me asking questions and saying nice things. Isn't this fun?!

Here is a quick guide if you are new to meditation or looking for ways to practice.

First sit down. A chair, the floor, it doesn't matter. It's nice if it's quiet but it doesn't have to be. You can play the Universal Breathing Room to guide your breath. Or nature sounds are nice.

It helps to have a single point to stare at to help you focus your attention. Pick a spot on the wall, or light a candle. Set a timer for 5, 10, or 15 minutes. Work up to 15 minutes a day, twice a day if you fancy. Then, just relax.

You don't have to do anything specific. There is no goal. The point is to meditate because it feels good. One way to look at it, is that it is a time to be still, to not do a thing. To rest, recharge, and be free from the demands of the world.

From another perspective, you are becoming one with god, with life itself. When you quiet your mind and focus your attention within, you can feel the source from which you came. You can feel the flow of life, you can see the synchronicity of all things. You may be reminded of how connected we all are, of how deep life really is. You are accessing infinite intelligence.

Sometimes it's hard to take our focus from the external world of the mind to the internal self. There are many techniques you can experiment with to train your attention.

  • You can count silently in your head, giving your mind something to do but still providing a break from mental chatter.
  • You can focus your attention on your breath, thinking "IN" and "OUT", or practice feeling the point on your nose where breath enter and leaves your body.
  • You can repeat a mantra over and over, such as "I am at peace with what is" or "I love myself" or "Breathe in and raise your vibration, breathe out and release your resistance."
  • You can do visualization exercises, lighting up your chakras with each breath, or imagining how it would feel to have what you want.
  • You can practice "being the watcher", and just observe your thoughts as they come.
  • You can practice "feeling your body from within," to feel the life inside you.

Or you can forget everything I've said and just sit. Your own practice will come to you if you give yourself the opportunity. You're already awake :-)

I am allowing myself to feel better and better. I am counting and doing my simran. I am one with life. I am enjoying this moment, right now. I am my meditating self. I am allowing myself to feel good right now. I am allowing myself to be present. I am allowing myself to have the best day of my life. I am allowing myself to let go. I love myself. I am my reason for feeling good. I am letting go. I am off the roller coaster. I am here now. I am enjoying the moment. I am free. I am here now. I am at peace with what is. I am so happy with what I have.

I love it when I do the work. I love it when I choose to feel good now. I love it when I do me. I love it when I get off the roller coaster. I love it when I feel energetic without drugs. I love it when I feel good just being. I love it when I count. I love it when I make choices that serve me. I love it when I feel excited about life. I love it when I love doing my work. You have to be your source of feeling good. You just choose to feel good and then your reality reflects it. You have to make the choice first.

Saturday Solutions: 10 blahblahblahs to blahblahblah

I skipped writing Tuesday Tips this week because it felt more like work than art. "Why bother?" I asked myself. "Writing things down just pulls me out of the Now anyway." I asked Kelly what I should do and she said, "There is a time for Tuesday Tips, and there is a time to take a break from Tuesday Tips. Don't do it if you don't want to. I know that soon you'll write them again and tell me how much they help you." I let it go and now here I am, bursting with ideas I have to write down so they can leave my mind for yours. Here are a few illustrations of the laws of the universe I've noticed in my reality the past week.

Doing

1. Do you.
I don't really know how one does oneself, but I know it involves standing up for oneself and sometimes saying no. Whenever I try to do things to make other people happy, I get the short end of the stick. Do the things that make you happy, and then it doesn't matter how anyone else feels.

2. Do what you want first.
My friend Jenny has excellent job advice. To the people who get a full time job and think to themselves, "I'll just work this job for a while, then do the things I want." You'll never do the things you want, ever. First, do the things you want, and bank on your job working around it. Then you're always doing what you want and don't feel imprisoned by work.

3. Prepave parties and other group events.
Picture everyone having a good time, feeling joyful, having fun! We're going to a BBQ today and I am imagining hula hooping, grilling, water balloons, and fire. People laughing and laughing. Some sort of game that is so fun to play. Beers and jokes. Feeling welcome. Feeling delighted! (Here's our prepaving worksheet if you want a more structured exercise).

4. Don't worry about it.
Kelly had a dream where she was really pissed off at someone. Her mom said to her, "Don't worry about it." Pretty much the best advice ever, so now whenever one of us brings up a concern, we say to each other, "Don't worry about it."

5. Count silently in your head. Aim for 10,000.
I go back and forth with silent counting. I understand that it's ideal to let thoughts pass by like clouds past a window, but sometimes I get so wrapped up in my thoughts I forget to watch them. Silent counting gives me some breathing room. I still have plenty of thoughts, but instead of going down the whole storyline of each thought, I let it go and go back to counting. Silent counting helps me see that the majority of my thoughts are not important or necessary to think about, and I feel so much less anxiety.

6. Try this mantra: "I don't give a fuck; I love myself."
Last week I had a crappy day. It helped me realize I was caring way too much about what other people think. If I love myself, then it doesn't matter what other people think. Thus, a new mantra was born. I don't care if someone loves me less because I didn't please them. I love me enough for the both of us ♪

7. Make peace with what is.
I went downtown to work out and Kelly stayed home. I figured once I got back, she was going to want to leave right away. I was stressed about having to go out (I know, poor me) and all I wanted to do was stay in and work. I decided to not resist the flow, and just stopped caring about having the time to work. In the big picture, it truly doesn't matter. When I got home, Kelly was all, "Let's get our work done!" I got what I wanted because I stopped caring if I got it.

Being

8. Go more deeply into this moment.
Eckhart Tolle recommends doing this to become more present and less identified with your thoughts. Say to yourself, "Go more deeply into this moment." How? Where? The answers are there when you ask.

9. Be creative.
A couple weeks ago, they painted our entire apartment complex white. They painted white on the brick! They painted the big concrete walls! Distressing at first, but I decided to embrace the change. "Maybe they're priming the surfaces for murals." Then they painted a mural! A tiny example, but it encourages me to dream bigger (there's a worksheet for that!).

10. Relax. Enjoy this moment.
Right now is all there is. You are a perfect dance of awareness! This moment is its own reward.

I am allowing life to take care of me. I am letting life be fun and easy. I am in the flow. I am allowing life to take care of me. I am allowing life to be fun and easy. I am allowing life to flow through me. I am allowing myself to feel better. I am allowing myself to count. I am allowing myself to let go. I am surrendering. I am surrendering to what is. Today I have decided to become passionate about life design again. I've been coasting for what feels like years, losing enthusiasm for my work.

I use lifestreaming for my life design methodology. I record, document and share my life. Then I reflect. Then I iterate. I put my videos in our podcast, share my photos to Facebook, Instagram and Flickr. I stream my random thoughts on Twitter. I write about what I'm grateful for and what I love on my website. I share the tools I create at the School of Life Design.

I don't have to figure it out. I don't have to know it all. I can let it flow now. I am creating now.

How to be a witch

Wouldn't it be nice to practice being a witch today? Wouldn't it be nice to let myself go deeper and deeper into it? Wouldn't it be nice to feel better and better as the day goes on? Wouldn't it be nice to feel more and more powerful? Wouldn't it be nice to create a new amazing project? Wouldn't it be nice to publish the planner to the school? Wouldn't it be nice to get a new camera?

I'm switching to the reality I prefer. In the reality I prefer, I am a witch. I am powerful. I know what I'm doing. I'm doing everything right. I'm in control of my vibration. I'm a witch. I'm allowing myself to feel powerful. I'm allowing myself to feel good about life. I'm allowing myself to have fun. I'm allowing myself to enjoy this day. I'm allowing life to take care of me. I'm allowing myself to be magickal.

In the reality I prefer, I am in alignment. I am powerful. I am in control of my vibration. I am a witch! I am allowing myself to feel excited about life. I am allowing myself to feel powerful and in control of my mood. I am allowing myself to go with the flow. I am here now. I am present. I am enjoying the moment. I am letting myself relax. I am making my best work. I am trusting the flow. I am doing my best. I am kind and generous. I am at ease. I am aware of synchronicities in every moment. I am connected to my source. I am at peace with what is. I am so happy with what I have. I am in the flow.

I love it when I do the work. I love it when I write. I love it when I create no matter how sloppy it is. I love getting better. I love feeling good about myself. I love being my reason for feeling good. I love it when I feel taken care of. I love it when I have plenty. I love it when I have plenty to share. I love it when I feel enthusiastic. I love it when I feel passionate. I love it when I take care of myself. I love it when I lighten up and play. I love it when I unleash my magick. I love it when I share. I love it when I am inspired to create.
