Honesty and lifestreaming

What if everyone had a public, physical record of their experiences connected to their physical bodies? What if we could know a person’s history and current struggles at a glance? Would we be more understanding and forgiving? I think so, and I think it’s the direction lifestreaming is taking us.

How to print your lifestream

test lifestream printing

I am working on doing just that.

1. Install the Firefox add-on Pearl Crescent Page Saver. This allows you to take screen grabs of an entire site, not just what’s visible on your monitor. Set your blog/lifestream site to display a small amount of posts per page (I’m working with 10 a page for my first site). Then “Save Image of Entire Page” using Page Saver for every page of your stream. It will save as PNGs.

2. Open Photoshop and create a new document. If you are printing your pages to put up on a wall like I am, then it’s important that you determine how much space you have to work with. I can fit about 10 8.5×11″ sheets of paper in my space, so I’m working in a document that is 8.5×110″ at 300 dpi.

3. Paste in your PNGs and scale them to fit the width of the paper. I had to scale mine to 179%.

4. Test print. First, make a selection (using the fixed selection tool) that is 8.5×11″. Select the first page worth in your image, and print. In the print dialog box, be sure to check “print selection”. I am using a Canon Pixma iP4200 with borderless printing, so I had to set that up in the page setup. After you print the first page, make a guide at the bottom of the selection and move the selection down to the next 8.5×11″ area. This is when you have to see how much is getting cropped by your printer or in translation. I have to start my next print 3/16″ before the 11″ mark, because I lose that much in the printing process (I have no idea why).

5. Remove truly frivolous ink waste. My lifestream has a black background, and there is no way I am going to print over 400 pages of black strips. So when I take my screengrabs of my current lifestream, I will change the background color to white temporarily. The visual effect will be slightly weakened but a fair trade for cost.

This is worse than Christianity

A printed lifestream is like a trail behind you. You can see everyone’s in lifefuckcity. Your mobile device is your connection to individuality, to your physical self. Lifestreaming is a way for your physical self to prepare, remember, and know. It can be a map, or a ticket. Technology is a shoddy hack, but it will bring you faster to the realization that EVERY DECISION MATTERS. And everyone knows.

The massive realization I came to is dripping out of me like sand. I can’t catch it, I can’t keep up, I can’t make myself remember more. He said it’s like a dream and that’s how it escapes…

This physical reality we exist in is important, and it is also the trip. But I am obsessed with thinking about what comes next, what lies beyond, what has been revealed to me.

It seemed everything in my life aligned at once on Saturday night, around 8:30pm. All the exercise, healthy eating, meditation, cutting out alcohol and caffeine… even the hair dye. They all seemed integral to the experience. As if I wouldn’t be strong enough or resilient enough to handle it otherwise.

I have never experienced something so positively mind-altering and life changing as that. I can’t get the feeling back, I NEED TO GO BACK. How to reconcile this reality with that? My current solution is to treat this life as the trip that it is, and strive to reach LIFEFUCKCITY in every area of my life.

I’ve lost it. I’ve lost the feeling. It’s crushing me. It’s devastating. I came out of the trip feeling I’d just been let in on the greatest cosmic joke of them all. Now I can’t remember the punchline. I SAW IT. And it is gone.

I need to go back. My heart is breaking.

I wanted to create an image depicting the lifestream as a life support system which addresses Maslowian needs. This turned into a ‘lifestreamers manifesto as desktop wallpaper’. Log in for the full size JPG wallpaper download (1280×1024) & source PSD file.

I’m considering beginning a lifestream category titled “Lifestreaming for Utopians”, wherein I will attempt to provide ‘tips on the act of lifestreaming’. This advice may include things about workflow, things to try posting, and above all, realtime examples of why lifestreaming is a positive and powerful way to improve your daily life. Lifestreaming gives you knowledge, community, and self-discipline. I think everyone should do it! I would love to convince you of the same.

What do you think? Would you want to read advice on ‘utopian lifestreaming’? Also, log in if you’d like to snag the layered PSD of the image above.
